What is The United Nations
The United nations is a global organization that
was created in response to WW2 with the
purpose of defusing future international
conflict, protecting global human rights, and in
general improving life for all peoples all around
the world.
Principles of the UN
● All Member States have sovereign equality.
● All Member States must obey the Charter.
● Countries must try to settle their differences by peaceful
means.
● Countries must avoid using force or threatening to use
force.
● The UN may not interfere in the domestic affairs of any
country.
● Countries should try to assist the United Nations.
Division of Power
● “a general international organization, based on the

● However, Great Britain, China, US, and the Soviet
Union drew up the charter for the organization

Preliminary Discussion
The UN was first thought up by FDR who saw the League of
Nations and liked the base principles behind the League but
knew there was room for improvment.
FDR who knew who just how terrible a world war could be,
pushed for the UN in an effort to prevent future conflict
The UN Charter
● Officially Created the United Nations
● Signed on June 26 1945 in San Francisco
● Made at the United Nations Conference on
International Organization
● Written in conjunction by 50 of the original 51
members (poland was not present)

In the US:
● The UN unlike the League of Nations was heavily
endorsed by the US congress
● Bill to join the UN passed 65 to 7 in the senate receiving
an overwhelming majority
● Public opinion of the UN was unusually high as the
public looked for a way to prevent future wars
Around the World
● 51 of the top global superpowers of the day joined the
UN
● China,Russia, The UK, France, and The US (arguably)
the 5 biggest world powers endorsed and pushed for the
UN
Effects of the UN
The UN officially started 10/24/45 and is still serving the
peoples of the world today
Since its inception:
● There has not been a global conflict of the scale of wars
prior to the UN with blood shed
● The UN has passed funded/performed countless actions
to improve global living conditions and life in general
● Wars have been defused and global cooperation is an
everyday thing
