HISTORY OF CANOE LAKE
Canoe lake has a long and varied
history. It’s name probably originated
when Alexander Murray’s geological
survey party built a canoe there in 1853.
By the late 1890’s the town of Mowat,
on the Lake’s north shore, was thriving.
It had over 500 residents and a lumber
mill. Canada’s famous landscape artist,
Tom Thomson, spent summers working and living on Canoe Lake. In 1917 he
was found drowned on Canoe Lake, his
canoe washed to shore. His death a mystery still. Many of the cottages that exist
today on Canoe Lake are remnants of
the past towns and lodges. Today Canoe
Lake is the major point for embarking
trippers and campers, providing immediate access to the backcountry of the
Park. As well, it is surrounded by historic
summer cottages and camps. Memories
of earlier days in Algonquin Park.
